Superhero Fatigue: Are We Over the MCU and Its Endless Content?
Are we growing tired of Marvel's endless superhero saga? Explore the reasons behind declining interest and the impact on audiences today.
I used to be that guy who was obsessively tracking all the Marvel movies, seeing how each character fits into the MCU, how it would all line up for the eventual Avengers movie. Now, I honestly couldn’t care less what Disney + show or movie releases anymore and forget about sitting through the credits for their little teasers.
Superhero Fatigue and the Decline in Quality
Most audiences have grown tired of the superhero trope. It has failed to evolve, with Marvel sticking to the same formula, only now, they are mass producing it, making it more generic and boring.
They don’t have the influence with audiences anymore. The cultural phenomenon of Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War was something that only they could do. Now, people could care less.
There are too many subtle connections that people don’t have to the time or feel like putting the effort for. Back then, the quantity and quality of each movie or show was such that people would actually take the time to watch everything and connect the dots.
Now, it’s way too much to consume and the quality of content is not worth consuming. There are too many casual uses of multiverse or big comic book villains when before, using them in a movie was reserved only for the big ones.
A Glimmer of Hope for Marvel’s Future
However, in recent days, it does seem like Marvel are shifting back to their roots. They still have the quality characters and with movies like Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts and Deadpool and Wolverine, it seems like they’re heading back in the right direction.
They have boasted a strong slate ahead of Avengers: Secret Wars, with the reveal of Robert Downing Jr. making a comeback as Dr. Doom.
While people aren’t entirely done with the superhero genre, their standards have increased as the quantity of content increases. Accordingly, Marvel has to now take action to improve their standards.
Will they be able to bring back the old Marvel or will they redefine themselves and bring about a new era?
