Bengal Assembly Dissolved as Banerjee Refuses to Resign

In a move that ends West Bengal's five-year legislative term, Governor RN Ravi dissolved the state assembly with effect from May 7, 2026. The order, issued in Kolkata, formalizes the termination of the current House and clears the path for a new government to be sworn in after the elections. There will be no caretaker administration until a successor takes oath, as the governor steps in as the interim executive head during the transition.

The dissolution follows a landmark election in which the BJP secured a commanding majority, winning 207 seats to the Trinamool Congress’s 80. Notably, Mamata Banerjee lost her own Bhabanipur seat to BJP challenger Suvendu Adhikari by about 15,000 votes, a result that has reverberated through the state’s political landscape. The party leadership has indicated a prompt transition plan, with preparations under way for a new government to be sworn in at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Grounds on May 9, aligning with Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary.

Banerjee, who has refused to tender her resignation, has argued that she did not accept electoral defeat and has questioned the counting process. She has said she will pursue legal avenues, including approaching the Supreme Court, over alleged irregularities during the counting process. Officials note that without a formal resignation, there was no mechanism to prompt a continuation as caretaker chief minister until a new administration is ready, making the governor the short-term executive head in the interim.

Analysts say the dissolution sets the stage for a formal transition and a potential period of political realignment. While it consolidates the BJP’s mandate at the state level, it also raises questions about governance during the interim and how quickly a stable government can be formed in a highly polarized environment.
