Shocking Finds! Rotten Meat & Spoiled Milk Seized in Bengal Raids

Kolkata, West Bengal, A massive crackdown by food safety officials across West Bengal has uncovered shocking quantities of rotten meat, sour milk, and spoiled dairy products, sending ripples of concern through the state. The intensified inspections, launched as part of Consumer Protection Week which began on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, have led to numerous license cancellations and public warnings.

During a surprise visit to a prominent shopping mall in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas, officials discovered kilograms of rotten meat, complete with significant fungal growth, stored in refrigerators at several food-court eateries.

The staff at the shops told us the meat was bought two to three days ago, but they could not produce the necessary purchase documents,

a visiting officer reported.

Samples of the meat, along with some sauces and cold drink bottles, have been sent to laboratories for thorough testing. Following this alarming discovery, the Food Safety Department swiftly cancelled the licenses of almost all eateries operating within the mall. The widespread raids continued, extending their reach to various other districts.

Notices were issued to two popular restaurants in Baduria (North 24 Parganas) and Dadpur (Hooghly). In Kolkata's bustling EM Bypass area, three Chinese restaurants faced inspections where over 40 kg of stale meat was seized. The license of a chaat shop in Salt Lake was revoked after it was found to be using contaminated ingredients.

In Rishra, Hooghly, a prominent biryani seller was directed to discard its entire stock after officials found it had been using spurious colouring.

The inspections also targeted bakeries and confectioneries, revealing equally disturbing practices.

Raids in Suri and Bhiennaghar in Birbhum, Bhadreswar in Hooghly, and Shaktigarh in Bardhaman unearthed flies in milk and spoiled eggs being mixed into cake batter.

Authorities have expressed serious concerns, stating, "Prima facie, many of these shops have been following these practices for years." In response to these findings, many of the offending establishments have either been sealed or issued stringent notices. Officials have confirmed that inspections will persist across the state, urging the public to exercise caution and avoid visiting establishments known for such malpractices.
