The standoff over Jana Nayagan between its makers and the CBFC shows no sign of easing. Even after the film got relief from a Madras High Court single-judge bench, a division bench later stayed that order, and the matter is now set for a fresh hearing on January 21. This keeps the producers’ plans for a Pongal release in flux as the team navigates the ongoing legal limbo.
Producer Venkat K Narayana has taken to social media to lay out the timeline of events. He explained that the film was submitted to the CBFC on December 18, 2025 and reviewed by the examining committee. By December 22, 2025, they were informed the film would receive a U/A 16 plus certificate subject to a few changes. After incorporating those changes and resubmitting, they expected a formal certificate, but it did not come through.
A few days before the planned release, the film was unexpectedly referred to the Revising Committee following a complaint from an individual whose identity was not disclosed to the producers. Narayana stressed that the matter is sub judice and that he cannot disclose more, but he wanted to place the facts on record.
The uncertainty around certification has intensified as the revising process unfolds, leaving the team facing an unpredictable timeline for release. Meanwhile, the public message around the project remains strong, with supporters arguing that Vijay deserves the farewell his career has earned and that audiences deserve a proper sendoff on screen.
