Veteran Congress leader and renowned educationist D.Y. Patil, who also served as Governor for several states, passed away recently at the age of 92 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. His demise on Tuesday, attributed to age-related health complications, marks the end of an era for a figure who left an indelible mark on both Indian politics and the educational landscape.
Born Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil on October 22, 1935, Mr. Patil's journey began in active Maharashtra politics. He served with distinction as the Mayor of Kolhapur from 1957 to 1962 and later as a Congress MLA from 1967 to 1978. However, his most profound impact came through his unwavering dedication to education reform and social work. He founded the formidable D.Y. Patil Group, an expansive network that today boasts over 182 institutes, seven universities, and premier healthcare systems across India, fundamentally transforming access to quality education and medical care for millions.
Mr. Patil's commitment to public service extended to high constitutional offices. He was appointed Governor of Tripura in 2009, serving until 2013, before taking on the governorship of Bihar from 2013 to 2014. During his tenure as Bihar Governor, he also held the additional charge as Governor of West Bengal, showcasing his versatility and dedication. His significant contributions were formally recognized with the prestigious Padma Shri award for social work in 1991.
The news of his passing evoked deep sorrow. His son, Satej D. Patil, who is a Maharashtra MLC and former Minister, shared a heartfelt tribute, stating, "With his departure, the pillar of support in all our lives has been lost. Dada spent his life connecting people, igniting the lamp of education in the lives of millions of students, and making social service the goal of his life. He instilled in us the values of living as a true human being." He added that his father's encouraging words and teachings are "eternal treasures," highlighting the personal and societal void left by his absence.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis lauded Mr. Patil as a "man with no enemies," a testament to his amiable nature and ability to foster goodwill across political divides. In recognition of his immense service to the nation, Mr. Patil's final rites are scheduled to be performed with full state honours. A public viewing is planned for Wednesday morning, followed by a funeral procession, culminating in the final rites at the D.Y. Patil Medical College in Kolhapur at 5:00 p.m.
D.Y. Patil is survived by his four sons, including Dr. Sanjay D.Y. Patil and Satej D. Patil. His legacy as a visionary educationist, dedicated public servant, and beloved leader will continue to inspire generations.
