The Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) in Chittagong remains suspended as security concerns tied to ongoing unrest are reviewed. The IVAC Bangladesh posted that visa operations will stay closed until further notice, with a reopening decision to be made after assessing the situation. Security around the Indian Assistant High Commission and the visa centre in Shobhanighat has been tightened.
The unrest follows the death of student leader Osman Hadi, a prominent figure in protests that contributed to a political upheaval last year. After final prayers at Dhaka University, demonstrators moved toward Shahbagh and issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Home Ministry demanding progress on arrests related to Hadi’s death.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to express concern over the deteriorating security situation, amid broader reports of protests and tensions across several cities. The suspension in Chittagong adds to disruptions seen in Dhaka and other areas as authorities monitor developments.
In Rajshahi, a march toward the Indian Assistant High Commission reflected the wider mood of the period, underscoring how regional tensions can impact consular services. Officials have said visa operations will resume only after security conditions permit, and travelers are urged to await official updates.
For now, the IVAC closure remains in effect as authorities prioritize safety and stability, with reopening contingent on a comprehensive review of the security environment.
