In a significant development, Sangeetha, the wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, has formally withdrawn her divorce petition before the Family Court in Chengalpattu, near Chennai. This decision brings a temporary halt to a case that had garnered considerable public and political attention.
The couple, who married in 1998, has a long history. Vijay has previously shared that his marriage to Sangeetha was not a love marriage but an arranged one, chosen by his parents. In an interview, he once remarked, "This wasn’t a love marriage. I never went against my parents for marriage. I married a woman my parents chose. I always tell my fans that choose a partner selected by your parents, life will be beautiful."
Their initial meeting was rather cinematic: Sangeetha Sornalingam, a devoted fan, traveled to Chennai to meet Vijay during a film shoot in the 1990s. Their friendship blossomed into a relationship, which received the approval of Vijay’s parents, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar and playback singer Shobha. They first registered their marriage in the UK in 1998, followed by a formal ceremony in Chennai on August 25, 1999. The couple has two children, a son named Jason Sanjay and a daughter named Divya Saasha.
For over two decades, Sangeetha largely maintained a private life away from the public eye. However, this changed earlier this year when she filed for divorce in February under the Special Marriage Act. In her petition, she reportedly accused Vijay of an extramarital relationship with an actress, an alleged affair she claimed to have discovered in 2021. She further stated that despite assurances, the relationship continued, leading to her experiencing emotional withdrawal, verbal disdain, and what she termed "constructive desertion" in the years that followed.
The withdrawal of the petition on Friday concludes, for now, a case that put the personal life of a prominent political figure under intense scrutiny. While the petition has been withdrawn, Sangeetha retains the right to file a fresh petition in the future, should circumstances change.
