Bengaluru is buzzing with political activity as Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has called for a crucial meeting of his ministers. This gathering is strategically timed, coming just before the Monsoon Session of the State Legislature, which is set to commence on Thursday. The primary agenda is to formulate a robust strategy for the government's response during the session, especially in anticipation of challenges from the opposition.
The meeting takes place amidst ongoing speculation and significant delays in the allocation of portfolios to the 19 newly inducted ministers. For the past two days, this exercise has been stalled due to internal pressure from disgruntled legislators seeking accommodation and intense lobbying for specific portfolios among those already inducted. Consequently, the party's central leadership is now actively involved, finalizing portfolio allocations in close consultation with the Chief Minister.
Sources reveal that Mr. Shivakumar personally contacted senior ministers, requesting their presence at an informal meeting held on Wednesday afternoon. During this meeting, he is expected to outline the government's approach to effectively counter the opposition's moves and arguments throughout the legislative session. This informal session is a precursor to a formal Cabinet meeting scheduled for Thursday.
Adding to the political drama, the Cabinet meeting itself was postponed from Wednesday to Thursday due to the unresolved portfolio allocation. There's a strong possibility that portfolios will be assigned before the session officially begins. However, sources indicate that if the allocation isn't completed in time, ministers who do have portfolios could step in to address questions on behalf of the Chief Minister, who currently holds all additional portfolios. Mr. Shivakumar had previously stated publicly that he would personally respond to all questions pertaining to portfolios under his purview if allocations remained pending.
Beyond immediate opposition handling, the government is also expected to discuss and strategize on various other important issues that are likely to emerge and be debated during the Monsoon Session. The coming days promise to be eventful for Karnataka's political landscape.
