Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies have launched an investigation into senior officials within President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office. This development comes just a day after the country's recently dismissed defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, called for national elections despite the ongoing conflict with Russia, now entering its fifth year.
The investigation, announced by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, targets a "criminal organization" allegedly led by a sitting and a former lawmaker, involving high-ranking officials from the presidential administration and other individuals. Further details are expected to be released as the operation progresses.
This political drama adds another layer of complexity to Zelenskyy’s presidency, testing his resilience during a critical wartime period. It's not the first time his government has faced such scrutiny; last year, his chief of staff Andriy Yermak resigned amid a major graft probe, which was considered the biggest threat to Zelenskyy’s administration since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Fedorov, a key ally who helped Zelenskyy win the 2019 presidential election, was recently fired by the president. This decision, alongside the ousting of commander-in-chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, was reportedly an attempt by Zelenskyy to ease tensions between the defense ministry's tech-savvy innovators and Ukraine's more traditional, Soviet-trained military leaders. Fedorov had been instrumental in implementing procurement reforms aimed at tackling corruption within the defense sector, and his dismissal sparked street protests in support of him.
Fedorov, in a video address, urged Ukraine to find a "legal, safe, and realistic mechanism" to restore a full democratic process, even amidst prolonged warfare. This call for elections, combined with the new corruption probe, creates significant pressure on Zelenskyy as Ukraine continues its fight for sovereignty.
