The ongoing student agitation in Jharkhand, protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, saw a significant development on Friday as a delegation of state ministers met with representatives of the JPSC/JSSC Reforms Manch. The government has expressed its willingness to "sympathetically consider" the demands put forth by the students, aiming to de-escalate the 14-day-long protest.
Jharkhand minister Sudivya Kumar confirmed the government's stance following the meeting, stating, "We met the delegation of student protesters. The government is ready to consider their demands sympathetically." This assurance comes amidst sustained pressure from student groups who have been vocal about their grievances, which include the cancellation of the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination and a demand for an independent probe into the alleged irregularities. Students are pushing for an investigation either by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or by a panel of retired high court judges from outside the state to ensure impartiality.
The meeting involved four of the five members of the government's designated panel, Ministers Sudivya Kumar, Dipika Pandey Singh, Chamra Linda, and Sanjay Prasad Yadav. On the student side, a fresh 10-member delegation participated, including leaders such as Ravindra Paswan, Piyush Kumar, Rajesh Prasad, Neetu Kujur, Ankit Raj, Kartik Soren, Shalu Kumari, Ravindra Kumar Ravi, Anand Kumar, and Ankit Kumar. This new delegation was formed after the government had raised objections to a previous 11-member panel.
Despite the positive atmosphere reported by the student delegation, the agitation is set to continue. Six protesters are currently on a hunger strike, underscoring the seriousness of their demands. Furthermore, students have announced plans to escalate their protest with a march to the state assembly on August 10, signaling their resolve to keep the issue in the public and governmental spotlight until their demands are met. The situation highlights the growing concern over transparency and fairness in public recruitment processes within the state.
