Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has called upon the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir to facilitate Muharram processions throughout the valley. Emphasizing that these religious observances are an integral part of the region's rich cultural and spiritual heritage, she urged the administration to ensure they are conducted peacefully and with due respect for people's constitutional rights.
Ms. Mufti's appeal comes as Muharram, the first month of the Islamic New Year, is set to begin on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, with the significant 'Ashura' processions scheduled for June 26. She underscored the profound religious and emotional significance of Muharram for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, stating that it is a time of reflection, sacrifice, and remembrance, inspired by the values of justice, compassion, and human dignity embodied by Imam Hussain.
The former Chief Minister also pressed for adequate arrangements from the government, including efficient traffic management, comprehensive healthcare facilities, sanitation services, drinking water supply, and uninterrupted electricity to ensure the smooth conduct of these religious gatherings. Additionally, she raised concerns over reports of several young men being booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) following demonstrations related to recent developments involving Iran, urging their release.
In a related sentiment, Ms. Mufti highlighted the collective responsibility of Kashmiris in protecting Amarnath Yatris. She expressed that every pilgrim visiting is a guest of Kashmir, carrying stories of the land's people and values across India. She stressed the importance of ensuring pilgrims leave with memories of love, warmth, and hospitality, underscoring the region's commitment to harmony and welcoming all.
