India condemns Vishnu statue demolition amid Thai-Cambodian clashes
India condemns the demolition of a Lord Vishnu statue amid renewed Thai-Cambodian border clashes, urging dialogue to curb bloodshed and protect cultural heritage.
India on Wednesday expressed concern over the demolition of a statue of a Hindu deity in the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border dispute. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said such acts are disrespectful and hurt the sentiments of followers around the world, and urged both sides to resolve the dispute through dialogue and diplomacy.
We once again urge the two sides to return to dialogue and diplomacy, to resume peace and avoid any further loss of lives, and damage to property and heritage, he said. The border clashes erupted in July, and a ceasefire in July was brokered by the U.S. president, though fighting has continued this month. Hindu and Buddhist deities are deeply revered by people across the region, as part of our shared civilizational heritage, and should be treated with respect even in conflict zones. The government emphasised that cultural and religious symbols should not become flashpoints in disputes and called for restraint from all parties.
India’s position reflects a broader concern among regional players about the impact of the border conflict on civilians and on regional stability. The international community has urged both sides to resume negotiations to build trust and prevent any further losses.
