The town of Thetford in Norfolk has been gripped by three consecutive nights of escalating anti-immigration unrest, forcing asylum seekers to flee their homes for safety. Police Chief Paul Sanford confirmed that protesters were actively "targeting addresses" believed to house asylum seekers, and without police intervention, it was "highly likely" they would have broken into these properties.
The violence, which saw windows smashed and fences broken, led to officers escorting vulnerable residents away from their homes. In total, five arrests have been made across the three nights of disorder, with two individuals detained on Thursday alone.
Chief Constable Sanford also issued a stern warning to those involved in the aggression, emphasizing that anyone attacking officers would face the "full force of the law." Police responding to the scene on Wednesday evening, described as "fast-moving and volatile," encountered significant hostility. One officer was reportedly hit with a rock, another bitten, and a third spat at, with two officers requiring hospital treatment. The ongoing situation highlights severe tensions and raises concerns for community safety in the market town.
