Blaze on Arthur's Seat! Fire Crews Tackle Iconic Edinburgh Landmark Amid Wildfire Alerts

Fire crews in Scotland are currently engaged in a major operation, tackling a fire that erupted on Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh’s famous landmark, on Sunday evening. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) had six appliances at the scene by Monday morning, after being alerted to the incident at 6:38 PM on Sunday.

This challenging situation unfolds as SFRS crews also continue their extensive efforts to control a persistent wildfire in the Cairngorms National Park, which has been burning since Wednesday. A spokesperson for SFRS confirmed their ongoing presence at Arthur’s Seat, noting that four fire appliances were initially mobilized, and there have been no reported casualties.

Meanwhile, in the Cairngorms, park officials shared encouraging news on Sunday, stating that the large-scale wildfire affecting the region is now “largely surrounded.” They anticipated that evacuated residents might be able to return home later that day. At its peak, the Cairngorms fire consumed approximately four square kilometres. While largely under control, the incident remains active, with fire crews and partners working collaboratively.

Resources, including crucial helicopter support, have been instrumental in reaching and battling the blaze in tougher-to-access areas of the Cairngorms. Gavin Miles, director of planning and place at the park authority, expressed gratitude for the collective efforts, highlighting the positive indications from SFRS regarding the Glenmore fire being largely surrounded, while cautioning that it is still a live situation requiring continued vigilance.
