Emergency workers have confirmed a tragic end to the search operation in Wayanad, recovering the body of the last missing person following a devastating debris slip at a tunnel construction site in Kalladi, Meppadi. The recovery, made on Sunday, July 12, 2026, brings the death toll from the disaster to eight.
The deceased has been identified as Bikram Singh Rana, a project manager from Himachal Pradesh. His body was found on the sixth day of the extensive search operations, located in Zone II amidst a significant accumulation of iron debris. Officials have confirmed that with this recovery, all individuals reported missing after the incident have now been accounted for.
The massive debris slip struck near the entrance to the under-construction Wayanad twin-tunnel road project on July 7. The incident prompted a large-scale rescue and recovery effort, with teams working tirelessly in challenging conditions.
Following its identification by relatives, Rana's body was transported to the Vythiri Taluk Hospital for postmortem examination. It will then be moved to the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital for embalming before being repatriated to his hometown. The tragedy has also sparked discussions among scientists and environmentalists, who emphasize that such landslides will continue unless there is greater accountability in related projects.
