India's Oil Stockpiles Surge: Will Fuel Prices Drop Soon?
India's crude oil inventory hits a near one-year high amidst global supply concerns! Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri weighs in on petrol and diesel price cuts. Get the full scoop!
India has significantly boosted its crude oil reserves, with inventories reaching an almost one-year high of 104 million barrels by the end of June. This marks a sharp increase from 90.5 million barrels recorded at the end of April, according to estimates by global data provider Kpler. This strategic move by Indian refiners comes in response to global supply chain concerns, particularly after the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz during recent conflicts threatened a substantial 40% of India's crude oil imports. Refiners acted swiftly to secure alternative supplies from international markets to ensure energy security.
The big question on everyone's mind is whether this surge in crude oil inventory and easing global crude prices will translate into lower petrol and diesel prices at the pumps. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed this "legitimate question," stating that a reduction in fuel prices is contingent upon cheaper crude oil actually reaching Indian refiners. This implies a time lag before consumers might see any benefits.
Minister Puri also provided reassurance regarding India's overall crude oil storage capacity. He confirmed that India currently holds sufficient crude stocks to last between 76 to 80 days. This comprehensive figure includes crude oil stored at various locations, such as ports, refineries, pipelines, and the nation's strategic petroleum reserves, highlighting India's robust approach to energy security. The focus remains on managing both current energy demands and future uncertainties in the global oil market.
