A ferry ride at the Surajkund International Craft Festival in Faridabad turned fatal on Saturday evening when the ride collapsed, killing a police inspector and injuring 12 visitors. The incident occurred between 6 pm and 6:30 pm as the festival drew crowds for the weekend.
The inspector, Jagdish Prasad, who was posted in Palwal and deployed to oversee security for the fair, was said to be involved in rescue operations when debris fell on him. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment, according to authorities. The injured visitors were admitted to two different hospitals for treatment, with medical staff monitoring them closely.
A video captured by a visitor showing the moment the swing collapsed circulated on social media, prompting immediate attention from the administration. Faridabad police officials, including the city police commissioner and deputy commissioner, were at the scene to oversee the response and assess the situation.
Haryana tourism minister Arvind Sharma described the incident as tragic and stated that an inquiry has been ordered to fix responsibility for any negligence that led to the collapse. He added that all victims are receiving the best possible medical care.
The 39th Surajkund International Craft Festival, a hallmark event in the region, now faces questions about safety protocols and ride maintenance. Authorities have called for a comprehensive review to prevent a recurrence and to ensure the public’s safety at future events.
