Peter Kay show halted by bomb hoax as Birmingham teen charged
A bomb hoax forced the evacuation of a Peter Kay concert in Birmingham. A 19-year-old man, Omar Majed, has been charged as police extend security checks.
An evacuation at Utilita Arena Birmingham disrupted a Peter Kay show after police received reports of a suspicious item. Omar Majed, 19, of Washwood Heath, Birmingham, has been charged with false communications and will appear before magistrates in the city on Monday.
The performance, part of Kay’s Better Late Than Never tour, was halted about 45 minutes into the set as attendees were led to safety and searches were conducted. After officers cleared the venue, nothing suspicious was found and the show’s security measures were stepped up for future performances.
The tour is set to continue with dates in Belfast, Liverpool, Sheffield and Leeds, with profits from the shows donated to 12 leading cancer charities.
The NEC Group and the venue said Saturday’s show would go ahead as planned, updating ticket holders with next steps and thanking fans for their cooperation. Police described safety as the priority throughout the incident.
