Shakira Pledges Millions to Rebuild Quake-Hit Colombian Schools!

Colombian music icon Shakira has stepped up to help her home country in a big way after a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck last week. The pop star made a surprise and unannounced visit to Quibdó, the provincial capital of Chocó, one of Colombia's most impoverished regions and the epicenter of the recent disaster. During her visit, she pledged to help rebuild a minimum of 10 schools that were severely damaged or destroyed.

The earthquake, which hit on August 10, claimed at least 287 lives and left more than 26,000 homes destroyed. Chocó alone saw over 3,100 houses flattened and more than 265 educational facilities damaged. Shakira toured the ruined classrooms, offering comfort to schoolchildren and emphasizing the critical importance of education. "What worries me the most is that schools are not rebuilt once this emergency is over," she stated. "Every day that children don't go to school is a day they miss out on their future."

Shakira's philanthropic efforts are not a solo mission. She was joined by Howard Buffett, son of billionaire Warren Buffett and a long-time supporter of initiatives in Colombia. His organization, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, will partner with Shakira’s own charity, Fundación Pies Descalzos (also known as the Barefoot Foundation), on the reconstruction project. Buffett himself noted, "When she calls, I come."

Further boosting the recovery efforts, Shakira also revealed that both Global Citizen and Live Nation have each committed $500,000. These significant contributions, combined with the efforts of her foundation and partners, aim to kickstart education and bring hope back to the affected communities in Chocó. The commitment ensures that children will have safe and functioning spaces to learn and build their futures.
