Man Dies in Tragic Train Collision at Lancashire Level Crossing

A tragic incident unfolded in West Lancashire on Saturday afternoon, claiming the life of a man after a train collided with his van at a level crossing in Burscough. British Transport Police (BTP) were alerted to the scene at approximately 3:18 PM following reports of the collision.

Only one individual was inside the vehicle, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations are currently underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding this devastating event.

Authorities have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Beyond the fatality, two passengers on the train sustained minor injuries and received treatment. The accident led to significant travel disruption, with Network Rail announcing that train services between Southport and Manchester, as well as Wigan Wallgate and Southport, were suspended throughout Saturday as emergency services responded and conducted their work. Buses were deployed to replace affected train services.

British Transport Police have urged any witnesses who have not yet come forward to contact them, quoting reference 373 of 29 August.

Paramedics and the fire service were also in attendance at the scene.
