UK's Third Heatwave: Cooler Than June, But Prepare for a Longer Bake!

The United Kingdom is once again feeling the heat as its third heatwave of the year gets underway. While many might recall the record-breaking temperatures and intense humidity of earlier heatwaves, this latest spell is expected to present a different kind of challenge: a longer duration of high temperatures, even if they don't reach the same extreme peaks.

The previous two heatwaves earlier this year certainly left their mark. May saw temperatures hit 35.1C, while June soared to a scorching 37.7C, breaking monthly records. The June heatwave was particularly memorable for its high humidity, making conditions feel well over 40C in some areas, and experiencing "tropical nights" where temperatures didn't drop below 20C. During those periods, the UK saw Amber and Red heat-health alerts, with the Met Office even issuing a rare red warning for extreme heat. The June heatwave saw temperatures exceed 30C for seven consecutive days, while May had six such days.

This third heatwave, however, is forecast to be less about extreme intensity and more about endurance. While temperatures are not expected to reach the 37C+ seen in June, the heat is projected to last significantly longer. Forecasters suggest that parts of the UK could see temperatures above 30C for up to 10 consecutive days. London, in particular, is anticipated to experience temperatures that could surpass popular holiday destinations like Ibiza and Barbados.

As the nation braces for this extended period of warm weather, heat health warnings have been put in place for the coming week. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, seek shade, and take precautions to ensure their well-being during what promises to be a prolonged warm spell across the country.
