Jenrick, who previously served as the Newark MP and has since joined Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party as its Treasury spokesman, faces scrutiny over the origins of these funds. The investigation follows a referral from the Electoral Commission, which had been looking into donations connected to the 2024 leadership campaign.
The money in question is a portion of a £100,000 donation made by British entrepreneur Phillip Ullmann, through his company Spott Fitness. However, allegations suggest that £37,500 of this amount ultimately came from US businessman Gary Klopfenstein. Such an alleged foreign contribution would constitute a breach of the stringent electoral rules governing political funding in the UK.
While the Met Police did not specify individuals under investigation, they confirmed the launch of their inquiry on Tuesday, January 6, stating, "We have launched an investigation following a referral from the Electoral Commission... concerning donations connected to a political party’s leadership campaign. The investigation remains ongoing." The Electoral Commission has paused its own investigation pending the police's findings.
Robert Jenrick has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them "entirely false." He further suggested that these claims are an attempt by the "establishment" to hinder Reform UK's efforts to bring change to the country.
