TMC Slams EC Over SIR Deaths, Claims 'Blood on Your Hands'

A Trinamool Congress delegation met the Election Commission of India in New Delhi to press its case against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal. The party asserted that at least 40 deaths are linked to the SIR process, including 17 Booth Level Officers, and accused the poll panel of failing to ensure a safe and orderly revision. The claim was accompanied by a list of the 40 individuals the TMC says are connected to the SIR exercise. The EC reportedly dismissed the list as unverified, while the delegation pressed for answers to several questions about the rollout.
The ten-member TMC delegation, led by senior leaders, said the meeting with the full bench lasted about 40 minutes, with party spokespeople arguing that the EC has "blood on its hands" over the fatalities. Although the party stressed that it does not oppose SIR in principle, it criticized the execution as unplanned and heartless. The CEC allegedly spoke at length without providing concrete answers to the five questions raised by the delegation.
SIR is being implemented across 12 states and union territories, including West Bengal, as part of updating electoral rolls ahead of elections. The rift between the TMC and the EC highlights the political sensitivity surrounding the revision exercise and adds to mounting debates over the fairness and transparency of the process in the state.
