Supreme Court Clears Vinesh Phogat for Asian Games 2026 Trials!

In a significant legal victory for one of India's most decorated athletes, the Supreme Court has cleared the way for wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the Asian Games 2026 selection trials. The decision, delivered just a day before the trials were set to begin on May 30, comes as a major relief for the Olympian who has faced numerous hurdles in her quest for a comeback.

The Bench, led by Justice P.S. Narasimha, emphasized that Phogat deserves a chance to compete because she has made the country proud on multiple occasions in the past. The court’s intervention followed a challenge by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) against a previous Delhi High Court order that had already sided with the wrestler. The WFI had argued that the High Court's decision undermined its existing selection framework.

The WFI had raised several objections during the hearing, arguing that Phogat had missed previous trials and that her whereabouts had been unclear. However, Phogat’s legal team countered these claims by highlighting her recent life changes. They explained that she had recently become a mother and was also fulfilling her responsibilities as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Haryana. Senior advocate Madhavi Divan, representing Phogat, successfully argued that new motherhood should not be viewed as a disqualification or a negative factor in her athletic career.

The Supreme Court agreed that the "country comes first," recognizing Phogat as an iconic player who is returning from a maternity break. While the court allowed her to compete, the judges also noted that judicial intervention isn't always the ideal way to solve sports disputes. They suggested that such issues should ideally be resolved within the sporting fraternity through better cooperation between athletes and governing bodies, noting similar issues are currently plaguing other sports like football.

With the legal green light now secured, the selection trials scheduled for May 30 and 31 will proceed with extra oversight. To ensure fairness, the trials will be video-recorded and monitored by independent observers from both the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Fans across the country will now be watching closely as Phogat returns to the mat to prove her mettle once again.
