Bengaluru is in for a soggy week as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city, forecasting continuous showers until May 25. This warning comes on the heels of a chaotic night where heavy rain and gusty winds lashed the city until the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing significant disruptions to daily life.
The recent storm, which intensified after midnight on May 21, left a trail of destruction across various neighborhoods. Residents reported widespread power outages and multiple tree-fall incidents. According to officials from the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), there were 131 reports of fallen trees and 192 incidents of branches crashing down as of Wednesday morning. Emergency teams have been working around the clock to clear the debris, but the scale of the damage has made for a slow recovery.
Commuters weren't spared either, as Namma Metro services faced delays on Tuesday evening when the rainfall was at its peak. The IMD recorded 44.2 mm of rainfall in Bengaluru city by late evening, while the HAL area saw around 3.8 mm. The winds were particularly strong, leading to the collapse of many large trees that blocked major roads and damaged parked vehicles.
Beyond the immediate cleanup, a recent study suggests that these intense weather events might become more frequent. Experts point to a steady increase in thunderstorm and lightning activity in the region, driven by rising heat and humidity levels. As these factors act as fuel for storm development, the probability of severe localized thunderstorms is expected to climb in the coming years. For now, citizens are advised to keep their umbrellas handy and exercise caution during their daily commutes.
