Air India Caps Economy Fares on Non-Stop Domestic Flights
Air India caps economy fares on non-stop domestic routes since December 4, as government steps in to curb soaring ticket prices and ease travel chaos.
Air India has announced that it has proactively capped economy fares on all non-stop domestic flights since December 4, a move aimed at keeping prices in check amid ongoing disruption in the aviation sector. The government had earlier invoked regulatory powers to enforce fair and reasonable pricing on all impacted routes, signaling a broader effort to stabilize ticket costs during a period of travel chaos.
Air India clarified that while it has started the cap on non-stop itineraries, it may not be technically feasible to cap every permutation, especially multi-stop itineraries or combinations across cabins. The airline said it is engaging third-party platforms to exercise oversight where possible and to curb exploitative pricing on complex itineraries.
In its statement, Air India and Air India Express also noted plans to increase capacity to help travelers and their baggage reach destinations more quickly, aiming to relieve congestion and delays that have plagued disrupted routes. The measures come as the sector faces significant cancellations and disruptions, with many passengers facing unusually high fares on affected routes.
The aviation ministry’s intervention underscores a push to ensure pricing remains fair while carriers work to restore normal operations. The airline emphasized that its priority is to support passengers by stabilizing prices and boosting capacity, even as it navigates the challenging environment created by widespread disruptions.
