Fatal Greek Helicopter Collision: Briton Survives, Two Killed Battling Wildfires
Tragedy strikes near Athens as two firefighting helicopters collide, claiming two lives. A British national miraculously survives this harrowing incident amidst Greece's ongoing wildfire crisis.
Tragedy has struck near Athens, Greece, as two firefighting helicopters collided mid-air on Sunday while battling massive wildfires, resulting in the deaths of two crew members. A Greek and a Danish national perished in the horrific incident, which occurred in the Attica region, west of the capital. Miraculously, a British national and another Greek crew member onboard the second helicopter survived the collision.
The devastating incident unfolded as firefighters worked tirelessly to control vast blazes tearing through areas around Psatha. Footage reportedly captured the moment the two helicopters crossed paths at a low altitude. The main rotor of the lower aircraft tragically struck the underside of the other, causing it to crash down engulfed in flames. The second helicopter, despite sustaining damage, was able to fly away and execute an emergency landing, saving the lives of its crew.
The wreckage of one helicopter was later found on a road, a stark reminder of the perils faced by those on the front lines. Both Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Konstantinos Tasoulas have expressed their deepest condolences and paid tribute to the fallen firefighters, acknowledging their immense sacrifice in protecting homes and lives. The wildfires in the Psatha area have already destroyed more than 100 homes.
This tragic event adds to an already grim picture across Europe, which has endured a summer of record-breaking heatwaves and severe drought, creating conditions ripe for devastating wildfires. Scientists widely attribute these extreme weather patterns to climate change. While blazes in France and Spain showed signs of easing over the weekend, Greece has seen a resurgence of fires after a period of relative calm.
Sadly, this is not the first loss Greece has suffered recently in its fight against the flames. Earlier this week, two firefighters died in Crete after being trapped between two fire fronts in Rethymno. A third firefighter was also found unconscious near the southern Peloponnese port town of Gytheio and later pronounced dead. Investigations into the helicopter crash are currently underway to determine the exact cause, with aeronautical engineers like Phaedon Karaiosifidis indicating a thorough examination of all contributing factors will be conducted.
