Grand Egyptian Museum Opens Near Cairo's Pyramids, A Modern Wonder
The Grand Egyptian Museum near the Pyramids of Giza opens, housing 50,000 artefacts and blending ancient wonders with 21st-century technology to boost tourism.
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) rises beside the Pyramids of Giza, just outside Cairo, and after more than two decades of delays, the $1 billion complex is set for a grand debut this weekend. Marketed as the world’s largest archaeological facility dedicated to a single civilisation, GEM houses more than 50,000 artefacts across 24,000 square metres of permanent galleries within a 470,000 square metre site.
Designed by Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects, the triangular glass façade evokes the nearby pyramids and the building is nicknamed the 'fourth pyramid' of the Giza plateau. Inside, a six-storey entrance atrium leads visitors to galleries and terraces that offer views of nearby monuments and the skyline.
Key exhibits include an 83-ton Ramesses II statue and a 4,500-year-old Khufu boat. Many artefacts were moved from Cairo's century-old Egyptian Museum, while others were newly unearthed from sites such as Saqqara, highlighting Egypt’s long and layered history.
The museum also features 24,000 square metres of permanent exhibition space, a children's museum, conference facilities, a conservation centre, and a mix of traditional displays with multimedia and mixed-reality shows — part of an effort to make Egypt’s ancient past feel alive for a new generation.
Two decades of delays were followed by a soft launch in 2024; the grand opening, expected on Saturday, November 1, 2025, will be attended by world leaders as Egypt tries to reboot its tourism sector amid economic challenges.
The project is a pillar of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi’s drive to modernize infrastructure and revive foreign currency earnings through tourism. If successful, GEM could redraw the map of Egypt’s cultural landscape, pairing timeless history with new technology to draw visitors from around the world.
