England is currently in the grip of an unprecedented heatwave, marking its longest dry spell in 30 years for several parts of the country, particularly Southern England, where the heatwave has now persisted for a remarkable 14 days.
This extended period of intense heat isn't just a fluke; it's a combination of several significant factors. Firstly, our climate is undergoing rapid changes. Data from the Met Office reveals that temperatures in the UK are now, on average, 1.33°C warmer than they were between 1961 and 1990. Alarmingly, the very hottest days have seen an even more drastic increase, warming three times quicker, a staggering 4.5°C in the Greater London region alone.
Secondly, the atmospheric conditions this summer have created a perfect storm for building heat. The jet stream has veered far north of the UK, allowing a high-pressure system to settle in. This system acts like a lid, drawing warm air up from the south. Because this high-pressure system has been incredibly slow-moving, it has led to the development of what meteorologists call a "heat dome." This phenomenon causes air to sink downwards, compressing and heating up significantly as it reaches the ground. This sinking air also dries out, preventing clouds from forming and allowing strong, unobstructed sunshine to further heat the ground.
The impact is clear: parts of England are experiencing the longest unbroken dry spell seen this century. Temperatures have consistently been high, with the UK peaking at 30.6°C in Somerset recently. While the record for the number of days over 30°C in a calendar year currently stands at 34, set back in 1995, this current heatwave continues to test new boundaries and highlight the evolving challenges posed by a warming climate.
