The sweltering conditions, reaching highs of 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) in some areas, significantly impacted events marking the nation's 250th birthday.
Among the most prominent disruptions was the temporary closure of the Great American State Fair on the National Mall in Washington D.C. This event, a centerpiece of President Donald Trump’s efforts to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary, was shut down on Friday afternoon, July 3rd, as temperatures soared. Organizers later announced plans to reopen with modifications like cooling tents and misting stations, aiming to mitigate the extreme heat for attendees.
The record-breaking temperatures, which spread eastward from the Midwest earlier in the week, are attributed to a high-pressure system known as a “heat dome.” This phenomenon traps a mass of hot air over a region, leading to elevated temperatures and increased humidity. The National Weather Service reported that over 185 million people, more than half of the U.S. population, were under heat alerts.
