Indian para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar has captured the hearts of many, proclaiming her Commonwealth Games 2026 gold medal as "just a trailer, and the movie is yet to come." Her remarkable journey culminated in a historic win in the women's shot put F57 event in Glasgow, a triumph she says is only the beginning. Dhankar, 40, clinched India's first-ever para-athletics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, an achievement she initially didn't realize was so significant.
She produced a season-best throw of 9.81 metres, comfortably surpassing Ghana's Zinabu Issah (silver with 8.65m) and Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi (bronze with 8.19m). Another Indian athlete, Shilpa, finished fourth. Her path to the podium is nothing short of inspiring.
Dhankar overcame personal struggles, including surviving domestic violence, to reach this pinnacle of sporting success. She also holds the distinction of being Haryana's first female conductor, showcasing her pioneering spirit even before her athletic fame.
Speaking after her victory, Dhankar outlined her ambitious future goals.

After that, I'll set my target straight for the Olympics, for a good gold," she shared.
