Legendary soul singer Gladys Knight, at 82 years young, has issued a statement addressing recent concerns about her onstage performances. The ‘Empress of Soul’ has been touring consistently since the late 1950s, but in recent months, reports surfaced regarding what some fans perceived as troubling moments during her concerts.

Social media threads, including discussions on Reddit, raised questions about her cognitive well-being, with some speculating about exploitation.

Videos from recent shows depicted Knight being guided on stage or having her backup singers take lead parts, fueling worries among her devoted fanbase.

A notable performance at the Hollywood Bowl with fellow Motown icon Smokey Robinson was critiqued by Billboard's Paul Grein, who suggested artists should "know when it's time to bow out gracefully."

In response to these public observations, Knight shared a statement via social media yesterday. She affirmed her intention to be

easing into fewer performances while focusing on transitioning into the next stage of my career and life moving forward.

This new chapter, she explained, will involve more time dedicated to "projects" with her husband and precious moments "visiting with my grandbabies." However, she reassured fans that she still looks forward to engaging with them on the road.

Adding to the conversation, Knight's husband and manager, William McDowell, spoke to TMZ. He candidly remarked, "No one is ever gonna make me say, ‘My wife is well,’ but all she wants to do is sing." His comments underscore the deep passion Knight still holds for her craft, even as she contemplates a shift in her performing schedule.
