Banking Giants Rally: HDFC, ICICI, Axis Shares Soar Ahead of Q1 Earnings!
Indian banking stocks surge! HDFC Bank, ICICI, Axis, Kotak see gains as investors await crucial Q1FY27 results. What are analysts predicting for loan growth and margins? Get the full scoop!
Shares of major private banks in India experienced a significant rally on Friday, propelling the Nifty Bank index up by more than 500 points. This surge comes as investors keenly await the first-quarter earnings announcements for the financial year 2027 (Q1FY27) from several heavyweight lenders, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Yes Bank, all scheduled for Saturday, July 18.
The banking sector's robust performance saw individual stocks making notable gains. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares jumped nearly 3% to trade at Rs 386 apiece, while Federal Bank shares rose over 2%. HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank each climbed more than 1%. Other banks like State Bank of India (SBI) and IndusInd Bank also saw gains of close to 1%, though Yes Bank and Bank of Baroda experienced slight dips.
Analysts are offering mixed views ahead of these crucial earnings reports. Nomura, an international brokerage, predicts that banks under its coverage will likely report modest core-PPOP growth, attributing this to soft net interest income (NII) growth and controlled operational expenses. Furthermore, seasonally higher credit costs are expected to keep profit after tax (PAT) growth muted. Despite these projections, Nomura has identified ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank as its top picks within the sector.
Regarding loan growth, Nomura notes strong performance from HDFC Bank and Yes Bank, while Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank have shown softer growth. ICICI Bank is also expected to demonstrate strong loan growth. However, a common theme across the sector is the anticipation of moderating net interest margins (NIMs) for these lenders, which could impact overall profitability.
Investors will be scrutinizing several key metrics once the Q1 results are out. Mayuresh Joshi, Head Equity Research at William O'Neil India, advises close attention to credit growth, deposit growth, credit-deposit ratios, and asset quality. Other vital indicators include risk-weighted assets, provisioning trends, and, critically, net interest margins. These factors will provide essential insights into how banks are navigating the current interest rate environment and global economic uncertainties, ultimately setting the tone for bank stocks in the coming days.
