History is set to unfold in Vizianagaram as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to inaugurate the magnificent Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram on August 1, 2026. This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first visit by a sitting Prime Minister to the district in an astounding 43 years, a gap since Indira Gandhi's visit in 1983 for a Congress election meeting.
The state-of-the-art airport, built by the GMR Group at an estimated cost of ₹4,500 crore on 2,200 acres of land provided by the State government, is poised to transform the region. Officials and local leaders, including Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha and MSME Minister Kondapalli Srinivas, envision Bhogapuram airport emerging as a crucial economic hub, propelling growth and development across the region.
Preparations for the Prime Minister's arrival are in full swing. Collector S. Ramsundar Reddy and Superintendent of Police A.R. Damodar, along with other senior officials, have been meticulously reviewing all arrangements. Home Minister Anitha has specifically directed police officials to ensure foolproof security, adhering strictly to Union government guidelines, a critical task given the high-profile nature of the event.
Infrastructure is also being rapidly put in place to ensure smooth operations. The approach road leading to the airport has been completed, ensuring seamless access from the National Highway. Five dedicated parking areas have been identified to accommodate nearly 6,000 vehicles. A unique challenge for security personnel is managing heavy, continuous traffic on National Highway 16, which connects Chennai and Kolkata, as it cannot be stopped or diverted. Officials have assured that security measures will be implemented without disrupting the vital highway flow.
In anticipation of increased passenger traffic, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is readying a green transport fleet. Seven electric buses have already arrived in the city, with the remaining 13 expected by July 25, ensuring eco-friendly commuting options to and from the new airport. While excitement builds, there has been some public discussion regarding the airport's user fee, which is reportedly higher than those at major hubs like Delhi and Hyderabad, with travelers hoping for a reduction. Nevertheless, the inauguration promises to be a landmark event for Andhra Pradesh and a testament to regional development.
