DMK Rips Into Congress: 'Never Trust Them Again' After TVK Alliance
A major political fallout in Tamil Nadu as Udhayanidhi Stalin slams Congress for backing actor-turned-politician Vijay's TVK. Is the DMK-Congress alliance over forever?
The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is witnessing a massive earthquake as the long-standing alliance between the DMK and Congress has effectively shattered. In a sharp and emotional attack, DMK Youth Wing chief Udhayanidhi Stalin has declared that his party was “stabbed in the back” by the Congress after years of mutual cooperation.
The tension erupted after the Congress party decided to extend its support to the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the party led by actor-turned-politician Vijay. This move came following the April 23 Assembly polls, where the TVK emerged as the single largest formation but fell short of a majority to form the government on its own. The Congress, which managed to win five seats as part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, decided to pivot and back Vijay’s party instead.
Addressing a DMK Youth Wing meeting in Chennai, a visible frustrated Udhayanidhi Stalin told cadres that the Congress should “never” be trusted again. He claimed that the national party had benefited electorally from the DMK’s strength for over 20 years, only to switch sides at the first opportunity. He even went as far as to blame the Congress for the BJP’s repeated victories across India, suggesting that the Congress party's own failures are the primary reason for the BJP's dominance.
Udhayanidhi highlighted the hard work of DMK cadres, stating they shed “blood and sweat” to ensure Congress victories in the name of secularism. He noted that even in the recent election, the Congress won its five seats solely because of the DMK's instructions and tireless grassroots work.
Adding to the political friction, IUML leader Kader Mohideen remarked that coalition governments are likely here to stay in Tamil Nadu, much like the political climate in Kerala. Meanwhile, MK Stalin has voiced his own skepticism regarding the new political alignment, predicting that the TVK-led government will not survive its full five-year tenure.
