A 58-year-old businessman died in Gurugram after being hit by a speeding car while cycling in the DLF Phase-II area early Wednesday. The moment Amitabh Jain was struck from behind by a white Hyundai Santro with a Delhi registration was captured on CCTV, according to police. He lived with his wife, Ritu Jain, in the upscale locality and was on his habitual morning ride when the incident occurred at about 7:14 am. The driver accelerated and fled the scene, prompting locals to alert Jain’s family as ambulances rushed him to a private hospital in Sector 56. Doctors could not revive him, and the family is now left to mourn the loss.
Neighbors described Jain’s routine ride as an established part of his day, and noted that his son lives in London while his daughter is in Bengaluru. In a developing lead, police confirmed that the vehicle’s registration number was clearly visible in the CCTV footage and that the car owner has been traced. A police team raided the owner’s residence, but he was not at home and remains at large as investigators tighten the manhunt for arrest. Officers said the hit-and-run appears to be a case of rash driving, with an FIR registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita’s sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281, among other charges, filed late Wednesday night.
Police spokespersons emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and initial theories suggested the driver might have just come from a party or pub. However, all angles will be examined as officers work to locate the motorist and determine the precise sequence of events before and after the collision. The tragedy has underscored concerns about road safety in Gurugram’s residential zones, where pedestrians and cyclists share narrow internal lanes with faster traffic, especially during early morning hours.
