Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to make a grand entrance at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, and all eyes aren't just on the diplomatic agenda. A significant buzz surrounds his chosen mode of transport: the heavily protected Hongqi N701 state limousine, affectionately known as the 'Red Banner'. This bespoke vehicle is far from an ordinary car; it's a moving fortress designed exclusively for China's top leadership.

Crafted by Hongqi, a luxury marque whose name fittingly translates to "Red Banner (flag)", the N701 holds immense symbolic value, much like the iconic Hindustan Motors Ambassador once did in India. It's a custom-built marvel, with reports suggesting only about 50 units will be produced over the next decade, strictly for official state duties.

It has previously accompanied President Xi on high-profile overseas trips, including to Egypt, the United States, Russia, and Hong Kong.

While precise technical specifications remain a closely guarded secret, as is standard for any head-of-state vehicle, credible reports paint a picture of impressive engineering. The N701 is believed to stretch approximately 5.5 meters long and features 21-inch bulletproof wheels, multi-layered bulletproof glass, and reinforced external armor plating.

Sources indicate it can withstand small explosive devices and incorporates an advanced air-compression system to protect against chemical attacks.

Under the hood, a powerful 6.0-litre V12 engine is said to deliver around 408 horsepower.

The Hongqi brand itself has a storied history, founded in 1958 and long associated with Chinese state occasions. While the brand has expanded into consumer sedans, SUVs, and EVs, the N701 unmistakably reinforces its original state role.

Inevitably, comparisons arise with the US President's armored limousine, 'The Beast'.

Both vehicles are designed for ultimate protection. 'The Beast' is renowned for carrying stores of blood matching the President's type, a hermetically sealed cabin, run-flat tires, night-vision equipment, and even anti-ambush measures like smoke screens and oil slick deployment.

Its armor is a formidable mix of aluminum, ceramic, and steel, with walls reportedly eight inches thick and windows five inches thick. It also doubles as a mobile command center with encrypted satellite communications and access to classified systems.

While it's unconfirmed if the Hongqi N701 boasts the same level of integrated command capabilities, its presence at the BRICS summit proudly showcases China's advanced approach to leadership security and its prowess in bespoke automotive engineering.
