Forecasters expect highs of 28°C on Monday, rising to 29°C in parts of the South by Tuesday. The mercury will then soar into the mid-30s across England and Wales from Wednesday through Friday. Thursday is currently predicted to be the hottest day, with a 'fairly reasonable probability' of reaching 36°C locally, particularly in areas like the Midlands and the M4 corridor west of London, and a small chance it could climb even higher.
This prolonged hot spell is putting immense pressure on infrastructure, with potential disruptions to railway lines and power networks. Health officials have also issued warnings regarding the effects on vulnerable people, anticipating significant impacts on health and social care services during this period.
The ongoing dry conditions have already led to a severe drought declaration across half of England and all of Wales. Officials are scheduled to meet at the National Drought Group on Monday, where more regions could be added to the drought classification. Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan highlighted the unusual nature of this summer, noting that while these temperatures would normally be considered 'very unusual,' people have become accustomed to them due to the exceptional weather experienced so far.
