India & Canada Push for Trade Deal by 2026, Eyeing Massive Economic Growth!
Finance Ministers from India and Canada met in Toronto, reaffirming commitment to finalize a trade deal by 2026. Explore how this partnership aims to skyrocket bilateral trade to ₹4.65 lakh crore by 2030!
Toronto witnessed a significant stride in India-Canada relations as the inaugural Finance Ministers' Economic and Financial Dialogue concluded on Friday, August 28, 2026. India's Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne jointly reaffirmed their nations' commitment to finalize the comprehensive India-Canada trade deal, known as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), by the close of 2026.
This ambitious timeline underscores a mutual desire to deepen economic cooperation.
The joint statement released after the high-level meeting highlighted India's keenness to initiate negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) "at the earliest." A BIT is crucial for providing enhanced protection and certainty to investors from both countries, paving the way for increased cross-border investments.
This move is part of a broader strategy to significantly boost bilateral trade.
The dialogue also built upon prior commitments made by the Prime Ministers of both countries to strengthen economic and financial ties. The Ministers discussed shared aspirations to expand bilateral trade to an impressive ₹4.65 lakh crore by 2030, a substantial jump from the ₹70,354 crore recorded in 2025-26. This target signals a robust future for trade and investment between the two nations.
Beyond trade deals, discussions delved into facilitating greater engagement between Indian and Canadian financial institutions and institutional investors.
Both sides explored commercially viable investment opportunities across various sectors of mutual interest.
Specific areas of focus included deeper collaboration on financial-sector issues such as payments modernization, financial stability, and FinTech innovation.
Notably, integrating India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Canadian payment service providers was also under consideration to enable faster, more efficient, and cost-effective payments, benefiting trade, tourism, international students, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
