Mariska Hargitay Shines as Emmys Host: Pokes Fun, Sings, & Makes History!

Mariska Hargitay, the beloved star of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," made a memorable debut as host of the 78th annual Emmy Awards, delivering an evening filled with humor, music, and historic wins. Hargitay, 62, kicked off the telecast at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles with an extravagant musical number, transforming Joan Jett’s "I Love Rock ‘n Roll" into "I Love TV Screens," setting an energetic tone for the night.

The accomplished actor, who is the first solo female host in 15 years, quickly captivated the audience with her sharp wit. During her monologue, she playfully poked fun at her own lengthy tenure on "Law & Order: SVU," quipping about her unfamiliarity with the concept of a "finale" after 27 years on the show.

She also delivered a hilarious jab at "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf, humorously suggesting his real name was "Richard Penis," a moment that drew considerable laughter. The monologue even saw a surprise interruption from Nicole Kidman, whom Hargitay playfully dismissed with "Zip it, movie lady. It's TV's turn tonight."

Hargitay’s hosting performance garnered widespread praise on social media, with fans clamoring for her to host all future events.

Beyond her hosting duties, Hargitay herself is a four-time Emmy winner, having secured two additional awards just last week at the Creative Arts Emmys for her documentary "My Mom Jayne," about her mother Jayne Mansfield.

The 78th Emmys also celebrated other significant achievements.

Jean Smart made history by winning Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for the fifth consecutive year for "Hacks," matching the record for most overall acting wins with eight, alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman. Other early winners included Kate O'Flynn for her supporting role in "Widow's Bay" and Matthew Rhys for "The Beast In Me."

While "The Pitt" led the nominations with 25 nods, followed by "Hacks" and "Widow’s Bay," the evening wasn't just about the awards.
