Shivakumar tipped to be Karnataka CM on Jan 6, says Congress MLA

A Congress MLA, H A Iqbal Hussain, claimed there is a 99% chance that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar will take over as Karnataka's chief minister on January 6, replacing incumbent Siddaramaiah. He told reporters the date has been picked from among a couple of dates people have been mentioning, with January 6 emerging as the likely turnover. There is no official confirmation yet, but Hussain asserted Shivakumar should be given the top post and reiterated his support for the deputy chief minister.

Hussain has been openly demanding that Shivakumar be made chief minister and had publicly expressed his wish a day earlier as well. Union Minister of State for Railways and BJP MP V Somanna said he is backing Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara for the chief minister’s post, adding that power is largely a matter of luck and that it is their wish to see Parameshwara as CM.

The ongoing leadership tussle is further complicated by speculation following a dinner meeting hosted by Shivakumar with over 30 legislators and ministers, fueling talk of possible leadership transition after the 2023 election victory. Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are scheduled to meet Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi in Delhi on December 14, amid the continuing discussion over the next step for the state Congress government.
