The UK is gearing up for its third heatwave of the year this weekend, with temperatures expected to climb significantly, especially across the south and southeast of the country. While June saw record-breaking heat, this upcoming spell is predicted to be more pleasant, with lower humidity levels making it feel less uncomfortable.
Forecasters indicate that the heat will primarily concentrate on the southern regions, where temperatures are expected to soar above 26C. Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern noted that this heatwave "is not going to be as hot or as humid so not quite as uncomfortable, and not quite as impactful. It also will not affect the whole of UK."
On Saturday, the southeast of England could see highs of 28C, with temperatures in the wider south remaining above 20C. Further north, temperatures will linger in the high teens, while Scotland will experience mid-teen temperatures around 16-17C. Sunday is expected to be even hotter, with London possibly reaching 29C.
The warmth isn't stopping there, as the mercury is set to continue rising into next week. Monday could bring the peak of this hot spell, with highs potentially hitting 31C in some southern areas.
However, it's a tale of two climates across the UK. While the south basks in sunshine, western Scotland is facing a very wet forecast. Particularly over the west and northwest Highlands, there's a risk of over 100mm of rain by the end of the weekend. Sunday morning will also see pulses of wet weather across large swathes of the northwest, including widespread rain across Scotland, parts of northern England, the Pennines, the Lake District, and some outbreaks in Northern Ireland. The significant contrasts from place to place highlight the diverse weather patterns currently affecting the nation.
