No Bank Charges on UPI & RuPay Payments Up to ₹2,000! India's Digital Transactions Just Got Easier
Great news for digital payments in India! The government has officially barred banks from charging fees on UPI and RuPay debit card transactions up to ₹2,000. Keep your payments free and easy!
India has made a significant move to keep digital transactions affordable and accessible for millions. The government recently announced that banks are now prohibited from imposing any charges on payments made via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and RuPay-powered debit cards, specifically for transactions up to ₹2,000.
This crucial update, notified through changes in the Payment And Settlement Act, 2007, ensures that a vast majority of everyday digital transactions remain free for users.
This decision comes as a relief to many, solidifying UPI's position as a cornerstone of India's digital economy. The directive explicitly states that
no bank or system provider shall impose any direct or indirect charge on a person making or receiving payments through these modes
for amounts up to the specified limit.
This means whether you're paying a small shopkeeper or splitting a bill with friends, your bank won't add extra fees to these common digital transactions.
The move is backed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which has allocated funds to support the UPI platform, eliminating the need for banks to charge merchants or customers for these smaller value transfers. While this notification effectively keeps UPI free for users and a significant portion of merchant transactions, it's worth noting that it alters an earlier provision which had prevented banks from charging fees on all digital payments via UPI.
This suggests that charges on larger transfers might still be considered in the future, though a final decision on such matters is yet to be announced.
For now, however, the focus remains on ensuring smooth and charge-free micro-transactions, boosting digital adoption across the nation.
