JNUSU Vote Counting Underway as Left Unity Leads in Key Posts

Counting for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union elections is under way, with a close contest between Left Unity and ABVP across the four central panel posts. After counting about 4,340 votes, turnout stands at around 67% and roughly 1,500 votes remain to be tallied, according to representatives at counting booths. The day marks another chapter in campus politics, where ideological lines run deep and students push for a voice in the union's directions.

In the presidential race, Left Unity’s Aditi Mishra leads with 1,375 votes, ahead of ABVP’s Vikas Patel at 1,192 and Shinde Vijayalakshmi of the PSA with 915 votes. Turnout and preferences on the campus reflect a charged atmosphere as voters watched the tallies come in amid drums, slogans, and long queues at the booths.

For the vice-president post, Left Unity candidate K Gopika Babu has a strong lead with 2,146 votes, while ABVP’s Tanya Kumari trails with 1,437. In the general secretary race, ABVP’s Rajeshwar Kant Dubey has secured 1,496 votes, narrowly ahead of Left Unity’s Sunil Yadav at 1,367.

The joint secretary contest remains extremely tight, with Left Unity’s Danish Ali at 1,447 votes and ABVP’s Anuj Damara slightly ahead at 1,494. Sources say around 1,500 votes are yet to be counted, and final results are expected later in the day. Earlier in the election cycle, ABVP claimed a “clean sweep” in 14 of 26 councillor seats announced so far, underscoring the competitive nature of the exercise.

The JNU polls, held amid debates over campus politics, once again highlight the ideological contest between Left Unity (AISA, SFI, DSF) and ABVP, the RSS-affiliated students' wing. As counting continues, students, faculty, and observers await final results that will shape the university’s next year.
