PhysicsWallah soars on market debut with 33% premium
PhysicsWallah's ₹3,480 crore IPO subscribed nearly 2x, listing on NSE with a 33% premium, signaling strong investor interest in India's top edtech platform.
PhysicsWallah Ltd made a confident market debut, listing on the NSE at Rs 145, a 33.03% premium to the IPO price of Rs 109. On the BSE, the stock opened at Rs 143.10, marking a 31.28% premium. The Rs 3,480-crore issue, one of the largest from the edtech sector, drew strong bids but closed with moderate subscription. The IPO window was open from November 11 to 13, and the issue saw applications for 33.62 crore shares against 18.62 crore on offer, an overall subscription of 1.81 times. QIBs led demand with a 2.7x subscription, while retail investors subscribed at 1.06x. NIIs remained undersubscribed at 0.48x.
The deal comprised a fresh issue of 28.44 crore shares worth Rs 3,100 crore and an offer-for-sale of 3.49 crore shares worth Rs 380 crore. Proceeds are earmarked for fit-outs at new offline and hybrid learning centres, lease payments at existing facilities, and investments in its subsidiary Xylem Learning, in addition to general corporate purposes.
PhysicsWallah, founded in 2016 by educator Alakh Pandey, began as a YouTube channel and has evolved into a multi-format edtech enterprise. The company also announced an anchor investment of Rs 1,562.85 crore and plans to accelerate growth across formats and geographies, leveraging the raised capital to expand its offline and hybrid learning footprint while continuing digital expansion.
Investors have shown appetite for education technology platforms amid a rising demand for online and blended learning in India. Analysts note that while the premium is notable, the long-term growth narrative in affordable, scalable education could sustain the stock for those who buy into the company’s expansion plan and execution capability.
