Birmingham's very own Matthew Hudson-Smith has achieved a childhood dream, storming to gold in the 400m at the European Championships held right on his home track. The 31-year-old athlete dominated the field from lane nine, crossing the finish line in an impressive 44.17 seconds.

This victory marks his fifth continental gold medal and his eighth European medal overall, solidifying his status as the most decorated British man in the history of this prestigious competition. After his triumphant race, Hudson-Smith celebrated by heading directly into the stands, pointing to the stand that proudly bears his name, soaking in the thunderous applause from his adoring home crowd.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Hudson-Smith shared, "Words can’t describe how much that meant to me." He revealed the powerful motivation from his coach: "My coach said to me ‘this is your home, defend it’." He added with conviction, "No-one was going to beat me on this track, this is my home. I have been here since I was nine, I know this track like the back of my hand." He further asserted, "I knew I was the best in the world, I knew I am faster than every single one of these guys. It was just me against the clock."

His strategy leading up to the final was equally brilliant. In the semi-final the previous night, Hudson-Smith appeared to slow down towards the end, a move he later revealed was a deliberate energy-saving tactic. He explained, "The whole point of rounds is to survive and advance. I was trying to conserve rounds and we were just laughing all the way through, me and my coach." Sticking to his game plan, he took command from the start in the final, building a lead that no competitor could overcome.

This historic win places Hudson-Smith on par with British athletics legends Roger Black and Sir Mo Farah for the number of European golds. Only Dina Asher-Smith has more outdoor continental medals among British athletes, underscoring the magnitude of his achievement on home soil.
