US Tariffs Score Blow Against Hockey Families as Gear Prices Soar!

American hockey families are facing significant financial strain as tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump's administration on Canadian imports drive up the cost of essential equipment. In St. Paul, Minnesota, Kelly Rand's twin teenage sons, still in their growth spurts, require frequent equipment replacements, making the burden particularly heavy.

Rand highlights alarming price hikes: a goalie's helmet that cost $400 in 2022 now sells for $1,000, and a chest protector purchased a year ago for $465 is now $900. For a sport already known for its mounting expenses—covering ice time, gear, travel, and coaching—these new 50% tariffs on Canadian goods are an unwelcome addition, threatening to push prices even higher.

If a kid on the ice breaks a stick, every other parent is looking at that mom or dad going, 'Ahhh oh, no!'

Rand said, expressing the shared anxiety among parents. “You feel for them. How many $400 sticks can you afford in one season?” Hockey sticks and skates are among the more than 550 items affected by the White House tariffs.

According to John Merola, e-commerce director at B&R Sports, custom goalie gear and specialized skates from Canadian companies like True Hockey fall directly under these trade rules.

Merola noted that standard sticks now average $200, with high-end models reaching up to $400. He added that major brands, including Bauer, CCM, and True, continue to manufacture a significant portion of their custom lines in Canada.

Todd Smith, CEO of the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, underscored the severity of the situation, stating, “This is not a minor blip by any means.” He added,

Even if manufacturers have moved over the last several years from Canada to other countries, there's still healthy amount being manufactured in Canada and, yeah, this 50% tariff is a big deal.
