The holiday giant Tui has officially ended its sponsorship of Channel 4’s hit reality show Married At First Sight (MAFS) following a wave of serious allegations. The decision comes after a BBC Panorama documentary brought to light claims of sexual misconduct and rape involving participants from the UK edition of the series.
Former contestant Shona Manderson publicly accused her on-screen partner of sexual misconduct during their time on the show. Additionally, two other women, who remained anonymous, alleged they were raped by their on-screen husbands. All three men involved have denied the allegations.
The fallout has reached the highest levels of media regulation. Dame Melanie Dawes, the chief executive of Ofcom, described the situation as a "wake-up call" and expressed "really serious concerns" about participant safety. Speaking to ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Dawes indicated that the regulator is prepared to tighten guidance for reality TV production companies if necessary, stressing that the responsibility for safety lies with broadcasters like Channel 4.
In response to the controversy, Channel 4 launched an independent review into contributor welfare. While there have been rumors that the show might be canceled, Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra clarified that such reports are "wholly inaccurate." Currently, no final decision has been made regarding the broadcast of the next series, which has already been "substantially filmed" and is in the editing phase.
Tui's exit marks a significant blow to the production, as the brand has been a long-term partner for both the UK and Australian versions of the show. The travel firm stated it had cut ties following the revelations, signaling a growing pressure on reality TV formats to ensure the protection of their stars.
