ICJ orders Israel to ease aid into Gaza and cooperate with UN
The International Court of Justice in The Hague urges Israel to ensure essential relief and work with UN agencies to deliver aid to Gaza.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague delivered an advisory opinion on Wednesday stating that Israel, as the occupying power, is obliged to uphold humanitarian law and ensure Gaza’s population can access essential daily needs. The verdict centers on duties to provide basic supplies and to support relief schemes for as long as the population remains inadequately supplied.
The court stressed the first obligation: to guarantee access to essential items such as food, water, clothing, shelter, fuel, medical supplies and services. It also called on Israel to agree to and facilitate relief efforts by all means at its disposal for the residents of the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The emphasis is on continuous relief where needs persist in Gaza.
Additional obligations highlighted by the ICJ include respecting prohibitions on forcible transfer from occupied territory and on using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare. The court also said Israel must cooperate in good faith with the United Nations by providing full assistance to UN actions under the UN Charter, including those involving UNRWA. It further noted the importance of safeguarding the privileges and immunities of the UN and its officials, and protecting the inviolability of UN premises and assets from interference.
Although the opinion is advisory rather than legally binding, it carries symbolic weight and could influence diplomatic and humanitarian efforts as Gaza’s crisis continues. The decision is expected to shape discussions among states, international organizations and aid agencies about safe and reliable access to relief and the protection of humanitarian workers.
The ruling arrives at a time of heightened global focus on Gaza relief, with UN agencies and partner states under pressure to ensure unobstructed aid corridors and timely delivery of essentials to those in need.
