Google upgrades Android Auto with Gemini AI features and video apps
Gemini-powered upgrades bring video apps, a refreshed UI, and smarter in-car tasks to Android Auto across top brands.
On May 12, Google announced major Android Auto upgrades with support for video apps and Gemini-powered features at the Android Show. Google said the Auto OS will gain a refreshed experience, premium entertainment, and a more helpful Gemini across compatible cars. Across supported brands, the rollout aims to make in-car tech more intuitive and entertaining.\n\nAlongside the new features, Android Auto gets a Material 3 Expressive design — more expressive typography, smoother animations, and new wallpapers for a modern look and feel. The update is positioned as a visual and interaction boost designed to reduce distraction while keeping drivers connected.\n\nNew entertainment features include video app support, with 60fps full HD video quality. Video playback will only run when the car is parked; once you shift to drive, it automatically switches to audio-only. The feature will be rolled out later this year and will be available in vehicles from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata and Volvo. In addition, Android Auto will support media apps like Spotify and YouTube Music, offering immersive spatial sound with Dolby Atmos.\n\nGemini Intelligence: Later this year, Android Auto will be powered by Gemini Intelligence, which understands user context and handles tasks on your behalf. Google also showcased Magic Cue, a feature that can instantly send addresses to the car. These upgrades underscore Google's push to weave Gemini across phones, cars, and beyond, potentially reshaping the everyday driving experience for millions of users.\n
